What are ticks?

Ticks are small, spider-like creatures which feed on the blood of birds and mammals, including humans.

Ticks vary in size depending on species and life-stage but are usually between 1mm to 1cm long. 

Where are ticks found?

Ticks are found globally.  Their main habitats are woods, moorland and grassy fields, however they can also be found in parks, gardens and even beaches.

When are ticks active?

Ticks are much more active between March and October but, due to climate change, ticks can now be active all year round.

Why are ticks a problem?

Ticks transmit a number of diseases and cases are increasing year on year globally. Many of these diseases can cause severe symptoms and impact on quality of life for humans and animals.

How do ticks spread disease?

Ticks transmit infection while feeding from a host.  Contrary to common belief there is no proven safe attachment time before which transmission of infection can occur.

The risk is greater the longer a tick is attached but any contact puts you at risk.

Finding a feeding spot and preparing to feed can take a tick from 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on the species and life stage.

The tick will remain attached to the host from minutes to several days depending on species.  While feeding the tick will ingest any pathogens carried by the host animal and these pathogens may then be transmitted to the next host during the feeding process.

What diseases do ticks carry?

Tick-borne diseases are bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections transmitted through the bites of infected ticks.  In the UK the most prevalent disease carried by ticks is Lyme disease.

What are disease symptoms?

Tick bites are not always painful and you may not realise you have been bitten unless you see it on your skin.  Many tick-borne illnesses share similar early symptoms. If you have been bitten by a tick, watch for the following signs within 1 week to 3 months: 

Fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain and/or joint aches.

Lyme disease, Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), ehrlichiosis, and tularemia can cause distinctive rashes.

  • A Bullseye rash is an early sign of Lyme disease but present in less than 50% of cases of infection. A classic, circular, or oval red rash that expands outward. 
  • Diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever can cause distinct, non-blanching rashes.

Swollen lymph nodes. 

Localized ulcers. 

 

How can I avoid being bitten?

Treat your clothes and skin with insect repellent – products containing DEET are the most effective.

Wear light coloured clothing - this will not prevent ticks but does make them easier to see and remove before attachment.

Wear long sleeves and tuck your trousers into your socks. 

Avoid long grass and stay on clear/established paths where possible.

Check your skin, clothing and pets after being outdoors.

Shower within two hours of being outside.  This will not remove an attached tick but can wash away any unattached ticks.

Washing your clothes will not kill ticks, however, placing them in the tumble dryer on high heat for at least 15 minutes will.

 

What should I do if bitten?

Firstly, don't panic!  Not every tick will be carrying disease and not every bite from a disease carrying tick will result in disease transmission.

Remove the tick as soon as possible using fine-tipped tweezers or one of the many tick removal tools available to purchase from pharmacies, vets, pet shops and outdoor shops.

Grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible.

Slowly pull upwards being careful not to squeeze the tick.

Safely dispose of the tick. 

DO NOT squash the tick between your fingers - infections can be passed to humans via direct contact with the blood, tissues or body fluids on infected ticks.

Clean the bite with antiseptic, rubbing alcohol, iodine or soap and water.

Why do I need your product?

Current methods of disposal do not address the ongoing issue of ticks in our environment.

Methods such as throwing away or flushing down the toilet allow the tick to continue their life cycle - continuing to feed on new hosts and breeding future generations of ticks. 

DO NOT FLUSH - ticks are not always fully swept away when the toilet is flushed so they can crawl out the toilet bowl and back into your house!  Ticks that are swept away are unlikely to drown as they  can survive under water for 72 hours so flushing down the toilet allows them to exit the system at another point and continue their life cycle!

Crushing ticks after removal can permanently remove them, however, there is a risk of infection from bodily fluids should you come into contact with them.

Our product both removes this risk and prevents release of the tick to continue it's life cycle.

Should I report a sighting?

Reporting a tick sighting is not compulsory but if you wish to do so can be done via the UK Health Service Agency Tick Surveillance Scheme.
